Social Media or Social Circus? The Ranveer Allahabadia Debate
Ranveer Allahabadia, also known as BeerBiceps, is a famous digital content creator, youtuber and a podcast host. Initially he was a fitness vlogger but as of now he is indulged in various social media activities. However, recent events on a famous YouTube show “India’s Got Latent” have sparked numerous debates and controversies against as well as in his favor.
Lately, social media platforms have been buzzing with opinions and reactions on this case. Though, personally, I believe that the comment that he passed was somehow derogatory. But at the same time given that the show was itself was of comedy and dark humor genre, his comment could have just been taken as a joke.
Well, the people have a mixed opinion about it. Some see it as a misunderstanding or miscommunication while the others have given it much more importance highlighting more deeper problems lying within the youth community. But this makes room for one more question — if this controversy should be the biggest breaking news or highlight for a country where numerous incidences of much greater importance take place and which need actual media coverage?
If we compare it to the daily societal conversations, especially amongst the youth, the comment would be put in a said and forgotten conversation. While, truly, it is important to know our limits but to create chaos and giving it limelight more than anything shows the most unproductive side of the society.
This controversy does highlight the increasing scrutiny on social media influencers, as they influence masses of audiences, they are often seen and looked up for high morals and ethics. But is that truly acceptable to say so? Influencers are divided into categories, fitness, comedy, dark humor, food, fashion and what not, and the audience most of the times just look for source of constant fun element all through the social media. So, to target one of them for passing a comment, that too on a comedy show is not right.
Now if I compare this situation in context to international platforms, it wouldn’t have been this controversial. Everyone would just have seen it as normal.
In the end the biggest questions still linger — is it really important for such a thing to take up headlines of the whole wide country? And why is the society taking so much interest in such a futile topic when we have so much more to discuss? It is pointless as well as worthless and absolute waste of time and resources.
